For those of you coming to our show on July 14 and 15th, you'll see this guy, Rich Brunner in action. He will be giving a demo on mounted shooting. It is some fast action stuff too. We would like to get a mounted shooting group together here. It's a lot of fun and gets the heart racing. Come to the show and check it out! 

We have been busy getting the facility set up and we are also busily training horses too! Here is our apprentice, Lori ponying one of our "in training" horses, Allegro. He is a 4 year old Arabian. He is coming along very well. We have been working with him for just under 30 days and there is incredible improvement in his attitude and willingness to work. Lori is on her horse, Romeo. We had a beautiful sunset last night. Here is the warm up arena, main barn and main arena. We had a fun 4th here with all the crew, interns, friends and family with a BBQ, volleyball, campfire and music. The BLM adoption is here this weekend. We're going to introduce everyone to "Blade". We got him last year at this sale. If you are looking to help preserve our horse heritage and gain a wonderful friend, come out to the BLM Adoption this weekend at our facility. You can come to look at the selection Friday from noon to 5pm and get all the information you'll need. See you this weekend!  

We have signed a deal to take over the management of the Wahl Equestrian Center and Western Store at Double G Farms. We have been busily putting together plans and systems to make this place a friendly and happening facility for everyone to enjoy. Here Tommie puts on some much needed fresh paint. Public Rehearsal

Last night we had the chariots and the mustang, "blade" in front of an audience for the first time. I want to thank everyone for coming out to help us. We had about 150 people from young and old come out and give us support by cheering and clapping. We are doing it again today at 2:00pm to give them another go before we put on the show here on July 14 and 15th. "Blade" which is the WAHL Mustang Project horse, was awesome. He was so calm, my dad rode him around the arena. Tommie let the kids pet him too. You wouldn't believe he was running around the plains and public lands of the NorthWest just a year ago. I can't say enough about our interns. These girls came to help and learn. We have been working on many projects and they are keeping up the pace. Most places have one breed of horse or discipline. Here, we have a big American Cream Draft, Wild Mustangs, Quarterhorses, Foals, a yearling, trick horses, driving horses, and starting horses under saddle and sensory training. They are doing a great job. Lori, Jen, and Katy. Thanks girls!

Just found this picture of me with Chuck Norris and his beautiful wife, Gena. (Yes, I have a "Total Gym" and I love it! It actually does what they say it does. No gimmicks, no quick fixes, just simple daily routines and you'll get results.) They came to the Cavalia show in Glendale and I gave them a tour of the stables after the show. I am a black belt in TKD and he was such an inspiration to my family when I was growing up. His determination to always be a good guy, use technique over violence, and a role model to millions is what makes him a great guy in my book. karen  

Here is Tommie and I side by side with both chariot teams. We are having a public rehearsal here on Friday at 7pm and Saturday at 2pm. It is free to anyone who wants to come and see how we put our acts and horses through the paces. We'll also take time after the rehearsal to talk to everyone too.

After sifting through a bunch of memorabilia and souveniers from my run with Cavalia, I finally found my photo with Richard Gere. I am in my show make up, and this was taken during our San Francisco run in 2003. We opened the US tour there. Richard was very personable and animated. I would love to work with him on any project.

We filmed interviews for our HD Television Series while we were at the LA Equestrian Center in Burbank.I'm the one leaning on the fence, our Hollywood film crew and the executive producer of "Extreme Horsemen", Dafna Yachin. (with sunglasses on.) 

Here is Tommie Turvey and I, Karen Turvey with William Shatner during the Charity Dinner and Show. Tommie just finished performing and Lyle Lovett was getting ready to hit the stage. Bill is such an inspiration to us. The vitality and exuberance he has is contagious. We are looking forward to working with him and his wife Elizabeth again. 

Here is Tommie Turvey with his horse, Joker and San Diego's morning television celebrity, Rod Luck. After the Friday morning spot, the show sold out all of it's tickets to the Night of the Horse. Joker seems pretty happy about that! 

Training & Summer Fun

Wow. Just when I think I get caught up. We have been concentrating on the horse training this month. Our new apprentice, Lori is doing well. With the 20+ horses we have coming and going here it is a lot to keep up with. Everybody keeps emailing me with questions on the horses, so here goes. Pokerjoe is doing great. He won over a ton more fans during our California trip. Joker and Ace are doing fine. We got Joker's package for his Breyer horse and it looks awesome. What a great representation of him. Breyer did a great job. I'll get a photo of Tommie and Joker on my blog as soon as I can. Ace is still a little sweetheart. Tommie's mustang, Blade which is part of our Wahl Mustang Project, we got last year at the BLM adoption. He is doing great. What a relationship they have. I can't even believe the bond and respect they have for each other. He'll be making his first public appearance at our public rehearsal coming up in a couple of weeks. Sugar, our American Cream Draft is as big and beautiful as ever. On a sunny day in the paddocks, she is just a sight to see. I'm looking for a ring curb for her so we can get her ready for bareback (rosinback riding). She would shine in the spotlight for sure! The chariot horses are coming along great. My team for "Xena" is a beautiful pair of dark bay with black mane Morgan horses. They are lean and quick and gorgeous. (Just like Xena!) The other team for Maximus is Ceasar and Sparticus. They are Quarterhorse/Haflinger cross. A big matched pair of stocky horses with attitude. They are rock solid with the "buzz cut" to match. Our riding horses, Cees and Sparky are loving it when we hit the trails. We have had a lot of time to ride the trails around the facility and it has been lots of fun. Tommie is also training Cowgirl, owned by Ginger Ryals. He is working with her to polish her bow, pedestal, laydown, and other tricks. This week for the school, we went over the entire week of driving. The chariots are a favorite. Who ever sees them wants to drive them. We couldn't race during the school, but we discussed and explained each step and what needs to be done to get them to race and show ready. They really understand what it takes to make a great act. It's not just a pretty horse and a few tricks. You have to treat every step and every aspect with care. Every part of your act must have a reason. Next week we start with building your act on what you have now. This gets people to work with what they know now, and how they can make it better. We do this all the time and it really stimulates you to really thinking of fun things to do. With Cavalia, all of the trick riding routine was from working with each rider and seeing what they can do. Then we matched the horse to their ability and then put them in a sensible order to really maximize the effect. We would build up slowly, throw in a curveball, come out big and then when you thought it was over, come back even bigger! That's what we teach is how to create that magic and type of thinking. We've got a bunch of drill teams and mounted shooters coming to see what they can do to spice up their acts. Mounted shooting isn't an act per se, but they are being featured in many shows and they need to build the excitement and showmanship while they are shooting. I think it will be great. Everyone loves to hear applause.
Well, that's just a sample of what's happening. We still have the TV show, Training videos, new merchandise, on-line website and more to come. Tommie, my husband Jamie and I are really working hard to make this work. Getting Back to Normal

We are finally getting our computer back up to speed. For those of you who follow our exploits, I want to apologize for being out of touch. We just got out lost files restored (Thank you Jamie!) and I am back on the internet and blogging. I thought my photos with Lyle and Bill were deleted, but we got it all back. I am continuing my training with the chariot teams. They are Zeus and Apollo, a pair of 3 yr old Morgans as team ONE and Caesar and Spartacus, a pair of 6 year old Quarterhorse/Haflinger cross as Team TWO. Our other two quarter horses, which are 4 and 9 are now called Cees and Sparky (for now). They have had a hard time adjusting to becoming a driving team. They are father and son and great horses to ride, but when 4 year old gets together with his dad, he is a real stickler. I have photos I'll post soon of the teams. Training for chariots is not like a wagon. They are heavy, made of metal and make lots of noise. Plus, we want them to step up the speed and race each other, so the have to be comfortable with another team racing next to them. We debut them at Breyerfest in July and it is going to be a fun show. William Shatner Hollywood Charity Horse Show

Well, besides being a busy couple of weeks, we had an incredible time. We have been a bit out of touch, due to our computer hard drive crashing and then our cell phone breaking on us. I am actually updating this AFTER our California shows, because I couldn’t work the computer as it was being repaired. It is good as new now, but I missed a lot (We had 385 emails waiting for us!) We are working on getting back in touch with everyone., so thank you for being patient.
The Night of the Horse in Del Mar went incredibly well. The staff at the show, Lisa , Joy Lynn, and Kathie are awesome. They treat us well and put on a great show. This year with Tommie as the headliner, they had to add 10 more dining tables than the previous year and were 400 seats from a sell out. Tommie did a morning show with Rod Luck from San Diego and they said the phone lines lit up sold out the show. We wish more shows would work with their local media to do a morning interview. Most events overlook this, but it sells lots of tickets. Put something exciting on the posters for people to see and then blitz them in the media with “flash” and they will come. We prove it time and time again. Del Mar does it right. They have a great staff which is the key to their success. It was a pleasure working with Kathie Cox. She puts together top talent to give the people a class A show.
This highlight of the town was being able to walk on the beach and run the doggies. They love the beach. We made a trip to Tijuana and to see a bit of Mexico. The best place we ate at was NOBU sushi in Solano Beach. First off, we really wanted California Pizza Kitchen, which there is NONE in Sterling, IL. So we ate there one night. After the show on Saturday, we ended up going to a get together at someones house to unwind and meet new people. Michelle and the girls were great. Thanks for the hospitality and letting us relax with our doggies at your beautiful house. Everyone recommended we go to NOBU for sushi, So, we went and it was the best sushi I have had in a long time. First off, there were 6 of us and we always sit at the sushi bar. Watching the chef and interacting with him is what we like to do. As entertainers, we like to be entertained too. To fit us all, we sat at the far right hand side of the sushi bar. Our chef was this friendly smiling old man, so we knew it was going to be a fun night. Boy, we were right. It was even better than we expected. First off, he made these specialty rolls which were to die for. We asked him to make us something and for him to choose. He made this roll which was incredible with the request “DON’T USE SOY SAUCE”. So we skipped the soy sauce and Wow! We asked what was in it and he said “I don’t know?” He had the name NOBU on his uniform, and as the night progressed we figured out he was the owner (for 18 years). He is NOBU! He is 72 years young and a master at sushi. If you are ever in Del Mar, do yourself a favor and go to NOBU and sit in front of NOBU. He is there Fri-Sun. You won’t be disappointed. We left for Los Angeles and arrived at the LA Equestrian Center on Monday. They were getting ready for the reining show, so we got the horses settled in and started planning the weekend. We called up a few friends from LA and were hoping to get together over the next 5- 6 days. Well, my husband ended up spending 3 days getting the computer back on track. The hard drive with lots of important DATA crapped out. He got the blue screen of death and I heard him groan. So he was busy trying to recover and reinstall. I made a few calls and got hold of Christiana, who invited us to see her grandma, June Lockhart conduct a song written by her father at the LA Jr. Philharmonic. I was looking forward to seeing them. I hadn’t seen them since I was in Santa Monica with Cavalia. Before the show, I gave them a big hug as they anxiously got ready. Ever time I see them, I can’t help but feel good inside. They are such nice people. The concert was even more intriguing than I could ever have imagined. If I were to tell you I had a dream and the emcee was TV Game show host, Wink Martindale, Mrs. Brady (Florence Henderson) sang songs from “the Sound of Music”, Lassie’s mom was there as happy as ever, the voice from the original Mission Impossible (Peter Graves) was narrating, Sue Ellen (Linda Gray) from Dallas was there looking as pretty as ever, and Captain Stuben from the Love Boat was there and they were all competing in the “Battle of the Baton” conducting contest. You would say It was a crazy dream. Well, that is exactly what happened and it wasn’t a dream. It was incredible to see all of these people who were a big part of my growing up still doing what they love to do. Dr. Getz, the creator of the LA Jr. Philharmonic which he started 69 years ago, was also there to conduct the National Anthem. What an honor to watch all of these incredibly talented people. It was such a different side of Hollywood. This was only the beginning of the week…
Well, my husband was getting the computer back working and guess what? Our phone gets dropped and we can't make calls on it. The flip part is broke and I can't even read the phone numbers I need to make calls. (I guess with good there is always the bad.) By this time it is late Thursday night and we are on the go until the weekend was over. The executive producer of our HD television series, Dafna Yachin also flew out to LA to start talking with her contacts and selling the show. So between the Hollywood Charity Horse Show and our own productions, we were going full throttle. Friday we had dinner with William Shatner and his wife, Elizabeth, along with their horse trainer, Dan Giraldi. We watched all of them competing during the day at the reining show. They are true horsepeople. They compete, but are more concerned with creating a synergy with their horses than winning. Sure, they want to win, but their main goal is get more out of their horse than the last time, to communicate better, and to work as a partnership. They are very talented and passionate about their horses.
Saturday, our producer set up interviews with us for our TV series. It was a beautiful backdrop with all the reining horses and LA sunshine. We wrapped up the filming and got ready for Tommie’s performance during the Charity Event. This is a wonderful show which William Shatner donates 100% of the proceeds to Ahead of Horses and Camp Max Strauss, to help needy children with therapeutic riding and to interact with horses. Bill started off the show by zooming in the arena in an Asten Martin convertible. Tommie came out Roman Riding full tilt on Joker and Ace as the crowd watched in amazement as he flew around the arena and jumped over fire. Bill then explained why everyone was here, “for the kids”. He brought out Piper Nelson who through therapeutic riding is now standing, and the story of a former “Camp Max Strauss” attendee who attributes much of his success to the dedication and commitment of the people who donate and made it possible for him to go. Horses do have this magical power to make people go further, reach higher, and love unconditionally. This really hit home.
Pokejoe was perfect during the Riding Instructor. Tommie was quite the character too as Bill even got in the act and went out to help Tommie by giving him a carrot for Pokerjoe. It worked! Pokerjoe was distracted enough and Tommie got the chance to jump on. It was short lived as Pokerjoe then proceeded to bionically buck Tommie off. Tommie returned to the arena with a beautiful liberty act, showing the connection he has with his Paint Horse Ace. Tommie then finished up the night with a lighting fast bolt around the arena and a big loop on the pedestal finish. The fun didn’t end there. Tommie did a meet and greet and I took care of the horses and got them set for the night. We then changed and made our way to the dinner show and auction. Bill was the emcee and raised money with all kinds of one of a kind items. Things like “having scotch and cigars” on the set balcony of Boston Legal with Denny Crane, to a gourmet meal for 10 people at your home and prepared by Chef Dino of Whole Foods were auctioned off. The night was capped off with a personal show by Lyle Lovett. I had an opportunity to get a photo with him too. He sounded great and to experience an artist like Lyle in a small room atmosphere like this was something extraordinary.
Just when I thought the weekend was over, we woke up on Sunday and took the doggies for a nice walk. Props to the Hilton in Burbank. It is a first class hotel with the best bed I have ever slept in (besides my own…) Soooo comfortable. Everything was wonderful, and they allow dogs!! We got to take the girls to the lobby for Starbucks and around without hiding them. They loved it! We got a call from Tommie who said to be ready. Bill and Elizabeth invited us to the premier of the new Dreamworks animation,“Over the Hedge” with them at Mann’s theatre west. We rode to the theatre in the limo with them and they even invited us to walk the red carpet with them as they were interviewed by ET, Access Hollywood, Extra, and lots of photographers. We saw all the stars from the movie too. Nick Nolte, Steve Carell, Gary Shandling, Bruce Willis, Avril Lavigne, and lots of others. It was crazy and hectic and something I could get used to…
Well, to review the movie, it was very funny. My husband was cracking up the entire time. It is a great movie to bring your family to. Very entertaining and well written. Go see it and bring lots of kids.
We came out of the theatre and took the limo back to reality (aka the horses). We started packing up our gear for the trip home and Bill and Liz called and invited us to dinner. I can’t tell you how much we enjoyed it. The food was excellent, the wine was excellent, and the company was excellent. It was a nice to way to unwind, talk, and be ourselves. They are such genuine, generous, and caring people.
We packed up and left LA at 5:00am and headed home to Sterling, IL. Our overnight stop was at John and Josh Lyons Training Center in Parachute, CO. Josh is teaching their certification course so Tommie stopped by to give a “guest” clinic on Liberty and roundpen work. We also got a chance to have dinner with Josh, Janna and their boys, Austin and Johnny. I am writing this as we are just driving into Nebraska with about 900 miles to go. This was a bit long, but I had to put it all in. I didn’t get a chance to see most of my friends either. We will return soon and make more plans! Thanks to everyone for such a memorable time. Del Mar Night of the Horse

April 22 is the “Night of the Horse” Show in Del Mar, CA. Tommie is performing during the show with 4 different acts featuring Pokerjoe, Joker, and Ace. We will be working with Erik Martonivich and Alethea Shelton, Olympic Style Vaulters who I worked with while we were on Cavalia. Sabine Shute/Kerri will be there performing a dressage act and a 2 horse tandem. We love working in Del Mar. It is a beautiful place with lots of sun, sand, beach, and great horse people. I performed there last year under the big top during Cavalia and Tommie did the Night of the Horse twice before that. We will be in Del Mar Wednesday, and are currently driving through Texas on our way! It is a 3 day trip with the horses and we make sure they are comfortable and cared for. We also travel with our 4 dogs and 3 person crew, so it is quite the haul. We have lots to do when we get there with the media and such, so the next two weeks are going to be hectic. I hope to get some spare time for a few quite moments with husband and doggies.

It got to 72 degrees today, so Tommie and I were outside working with the horses. Here is Tommie and Ace with just a neck rein and a cue stick to communicate. What an incredible connection they have.  

Here I am teaching one of my students, Riley, during our Sensory Clinic. It was a great learning experience for her and her new horse. It gave her and her horse a lot of confidence to tackle the trails and more serious riding.

Here is a great photo of Tommie Turvey and his horse, Pokerjoe. This says it all of the relationship they have together. If you ever get a chance to see Tommie and Pokerjoe, make sure you see them perform. It will make you think of what can be done with horses. 

Tennessee Volunteer Horse Fair

We just finished up the Tennessee Volunteer Horse Fair outside of Nashville at the Tennessee Miller Coliseum. We had a great time. It is a mid-size show with lots of local vendors and clinicians. Matt McLaughlin, Van Hargis, Jimmy Driver, Ryan Gingerich, and Nicole Carswell. The show kept us busy all weekend. Tommie even got to judge the "Black Pot Cook Off". It wasn't quite as exciting as the Miss Rodeo contests he gets to judge, but it was lots of fun. Tommie did a demo each day and the show on Saturday Night. Wayne Williams announced the show with Tommie as the featured act along with Matt McLaughlin with dressage, Todd Shocky and the Wild West Stage Coach, Austin Anderson and Pamela doing trick riding, Crystal Lyons singing on horseback, jousting, mounted shooters, and a host of breeds. There were some great talent, but the show really needed help in organization and production. Tommie is a perfectionist when it comes to the show. We don't the show to be perfect for our sake. We want it to be the best it can possibly be for everyone who is there to see the show. The people who plunked down their hard earned money to see the show. Whether it's a full house or one person, Tommie will perform the same way, giving his all. In order to be consistent, we need the show and ground crews to take their jobs serious. If there are people back stage getting in the way or the gate person not paying attention, it effects the flow of the show and someone could get hurt. We understand the limitations some shows have and work through it, but they need to understand that we are trying to give the audience the best show possible and it means paying attention and having the right staff there to do the job. Jamie, my husband who also coordinates the music and lights for Tommie said the sound and spot guys were perfect and they did an excellent job. (Thanks guys!)
I just have to say thanks again to Clinton Anderson. We had a ton of people come up to our booth and tell us they just saw Tommie on Downunder Horsemanship on RFD-TV. It was reruns of the shows he did with Tommie in December. He was a fantastic host. I wasn't there for the taping, but Tommie said it went great.
We have the Sensory Clinic this weekend at our place in Sterling. It is going to be fun. We have a lot of things planned so people can work on their horses and get them ready for spring riding. We'll be working on obstacles, de-spooking, horsemanship, and riding. (There's still room left, so if you are interested in coming let us know.) It is a great way to prepare you and your horse while under a controlled environment. I'll be out there on Caesar all weekend. Tommie will be riding "Clip", our BLM Mustang we got last July. Yes, a year ago "Clip" was a wild horse, and you'll get to see him progress through a course with Tommie. It is quite a sight. Tommie has such a good hand with horses, we have more horse coming in for training in May, with private clinics and working on our own horses. It is going to be a busy year.

Here I am, (Karen Turvey) with my baby girl, Kenna. She goes everywhere with me. I even have a little travel bag for her. Every time I see her, she gets soooooooooo excited to see me. It makes me so happy, She is so lovable!  

Here is a great show of Tommie Turvey with Ace in the Hole. We were doing a photoshoot for WAHL and Ace loved the attention. 

PA Horse World Expo

Hey everyone. We are driving back to Sterling after a great show at the PA Horse World Expo in Harrisburg, PA. It was an incredible show. Tommie and I want to thank you so much for all the support. We wish we could have had the time to talk to all of you. The three days went by fast. Theatre Equus went off really well. Pokerjoe was perfect. It’s amazing how many people love Pokerjoe. He is such a character and gets the best of Tommie during the “Riding Instructor”, so people really relate to him. It’s nice to hear that even non-horse people came to see Tommie in the show. The show also featured the equestrian acrobats, Erik, Alethea, and Veronica of Big Horse Productions; dressage experts, Matt McLaughlin and Lynn Palm, Charro Roper Jerry Diaz with his wife Stacey; and the return of the Icelandic Horses of Gudmar Pederson. It was a two hour show with full shows both Friday and Saturday. Tommie also had capacity crowds at each of his demos during the day. His liberty training demo was standing room only in a 1000+ seat arena (see the photos below). Tommie brought out his best buddy and traveling companion, Bandit, an Australian Blue Healer cattle dog. Bandit kept trying to get in on the demo with Tommie. He showed what a good dog he is and always wants to help out and work the horses. We are writing a video to feature Bandit and how he does his tricks. He does everything from getting horses from the wall, picking up tools and trash, and getting Tommie a beer from the fridge after a hard days work. He loves Tommie and loves his job. The horses are his responsibility and he takes it seriously. Tommie is also raising Maverick, a Red Healer who is almost one year old. Tommie was a featured clinician and trainer along with Lynn Palm, Neil Pye from Parelli, GaWani Pony Boy, Kenny Harlow, and Richard Shrake.

It looks like we will be heading to California the last 2 weeks of April for the Del Mar, Night of the Horse and then perform at the Bill Shatner Celebrity Charity Horse Show the following weekend. Bill called Tommie last week and they discussed the show, so get ready Hollywood! We’re looking to put together a clinic or two while we are there and to get together with the people we’ve met out there when I was there with Cavalia. Tommie is looking forward to the Cook Forest Trail Ride too. It’s a fun time, so he hopes to see lots of people there. I’m trying to fit it in my schedule too.
